Among the variety of snowblades available for riding the slopes, there are those that are built for higher performance. These high performance snowblades are constructed with wood cores (adding greater stability at speed and long lasting durability). In addition, these snowblades usually have a wider body construction (more width under foot) that allows for faster speeds due to greater surface area, as well as for landing jumps and riding deeper powder. Usually, high performance snowblades also feature higher quality bases meaning sintered bases that will absorb wax better and thus provide better glide.
Keep in mind that all snowblades are fun. It always depends on what you want to ride them for. There are snowblade models that have wood cores, sintered bases but may be narrower in construction. These are great for fast carving, edge-to-edge turns and can be ridden closer together. These are not necessarily as good in powder or for jumps due to less surface area. An example is the Elan 99cm snowblades or Atomic 123cm snowblades.
Now there are still snowblades that are narrower in design, may come with extruded bases (still highly durable but does not hold wax as well) and may have foam cores (rather than wood cores). These will still carve fast, stop fast but could be a bit less stable if you like going really fast. Due to construction however, these tend to be less expensive which is a plus and gets you on the slopes having fun.
One other thing is that the higher performance snowblades with wood cores (or carbon in the case of the Atomic 125cm) allow for greater retention of release bindings. While less expensive snowblades usually come with non-release plastic bindings, the more expensive ones come with full on ski bindings that will release in case of a fall. If you want to have release bindings on your snowblades, then you can go with more high performance snowblades (wide or narrow) and ride the safest thing on the mountain.
Examples of high performance snowblades are:
Narrow – Elan 99cm, Elan 125cm, Atomic 125cm, Snowjam 99cm and more.
Wide – Summit Ecstatic 99cm, Summit Custom 110cm, Summit Marauder 125cm, Snowjam 90cm (won’t take release bindings) and more.
